Don’t know much about art – but you know what you like?
Interested in paintings – but not sure how to get the best out of them?

Paintings Unwrapped unravels the mysteries.

Visitor comments:

'Well worth the trip from London.'

'What an interesting exhibition. It really works for me. Good to see paintings I have never seen before.'

Paintings Unwrapped takes 60 paintings and helps you look at them with a fresh eye. By comparing one with another you can spot things you may never have noticed, understand the painter’s intentions differently, or re-think your own preconceptions.

If you already know about art history and art appreciation, you’ll love the paintings anyway.

If you’re a newcomer to art, you’ll love the refreshing way the selection is put together, the clues to looking at them and the sometimes quirky comparisons.

Drawn from Brighton & Hove Museums’ wide-ranging collections, many of the paintings have rarely been seen on public display. The variety and range is extensive – historical and 20th century, international and local, introducing many different approaches to painting. They represent artists of all kinds, including famous names such as Alma Tadema, William Blake, Fernand Léger, William Scott and Glyn Philpot.

You can linger in the full glory of the exhibition – or drop by for ten minutes to enjoy just a couple of the treasures on show. The more you look, the more you’ll see, and the more you’ll enjoy.

The exhibition was the brainchild of eminent art historian Professor Norbert Lynton. He was working on it at the time of his death in late 2007. One of his guiding principles was the way art can enrich the lives of everyone – but sometimes they need a bit of help to know what they are seeing.

At Professor Lynton's request, Paintings Unwrapped is now curated by Hilary Lane, who has a long history of curating exhibitions for national organisations such as the Arts Council of England. Hilary Lane says ‘Many people feel that there is a special way of looking at art and they don’t know what it is. There could be as many ways as there are people and works of art. In this exhibition I hope to help visitors to make discoveries for themselves’.
